UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION IN SINGAPORE

Figure: Singapore celebrating yet another underground milestone.

Singapore is a dwarf in size but a giant on most other fields. Together with Hong Kong, Singapore now also is one of the most expanding countries in Asia in underground construction.

With only 660 km2 and a population of almost 4 million, Singapore has decided to go for an expanded effort in underground construction. Information at the ICTUS-2000 conference in Singapore in October-00 showed impressive plans for the next 20 years on underground works. Most of utilities, storage, metroes and highway tunnels are going underground and even planned underground science cities were presented. Few countries exept for Hong Kong are expanding more in the underground than Singapore. Clearly the place to be for tunnel workers in the years to come.

Tunnel & GeoConsult was stationed in Singapore 2000/2001 as technical advisor for Ministry of Defence (DSTA), seconded by norwegian NorConsult International.
